Official Gambling: How To Host Your Own Home Poker Game

Home poker games are a great way to get together with friends and have a great time. There are so many different ways to host your home game that I thought it would be helpful to lay out in detail steps to a successful poker party. I am going to cover the main aspects of any home poker game: Chips, Buy-In, Re-Buy-Ins, Tournament Style, Blinds, and Cash Outs.

Chips - Make sure that you have a minimum of 50 varying chips per player before you start (You don't want to be digging through your pennies in the middle of the game). I recommend that you use 3 different color chips that will vary in denomination. Example: White = $5, Red = $25, and Blue = $50. The amounts of the chips should be higher than the real buy-in amount (This adds another level of excitement to the game).

Buy-Ins - I recommend that the buy-in amount be equal to 1 Real Cent = 1 Dollar worth of chips. Example: If Frank buys in for $10.00, he will receive $1000 worth of chips. I recommend that you set the buy-in level to something that everyone can afford. If someone loses their chips, they can always re-buy-in.

Re-Buy-Ins - My personal preference is to let anyone re-buy-in (trading money for chips again) at anytime during the game. In some of the more competitive home poker games many people want to see who finishes first. So, re-buy-ins are not allowed. I believe it is no fun for someone to sit out if they do not have any chips, so let them re-buy-in.

Tournament Style - Since most of you will be playing with unlimited buy-ins. I recommend that you play No Limit Texas Hold'em. This is the game where anyone, at any time, can put all of his/her chips in the middle and declare "all in". There is nothing like the excitement of No Limit Poker.

Blinds - The blinds bets that are made before any cards are dealt. There are two blinds the big blind and the small blind and they rotate clockwise (to the left of the dealer). I recommend that you start with the blinds at: Small Blind = $25, Big Blind = $50. Later on in the night, about an hour before the game will close, raise the blinds to: Small Blind $50, Big Blind = $100. This will really get the action going.

Cash Outs - I recommend that you make a rule that no one may cash out within the first hour. You don't want someone winning two huge pots and taking the rest home with them. At least give the rest of the players a chance to win back some money.

Following this simple plan will add a new level of entertainment, excitement, and enjoyment to your next home poker game.
